Their thesis, in full
Maple VC is a seed-stage venture capital fund based in San Francisco that backs almost exclusively companies led by founders with Canadian roots, regardless of where the company is built. Founded in 2016 by Andre Charoo (former #25 employee at Uber pre-IPO, EiR at Inovia, Co-Chair of The C100), now with partners John Edgar and Jane Lee, both named Partners in May 2026. Fund I raised $1.2M; Fund II closed at $16.5M USD in November 2021; Fund III closed at $33M USD and is marked above 2x, and Maple is now building toward Fund IV. Maple writes first cheques at pre-seed and seed, leading or co-leading, then leans on the C100 and Inovia networks to bring US tier-1 leads into later rounds. John Edgar is the firm's first full-time presence in Canada. Notable portfolio includes Clay (GTM data platform, valued around US$5B in a January 2026 tender after its August 2025 CapitalG-led Series C) and Neo Financial.
What they bring past the cheque
- Silicon Valley bridge for Canadian founders
- C100 network and Uber operator pedigree
- Inovia Emerging Manager backing
- Operator team (Uber, DigitalOcean, Shopify alumni)
- Track record incl. Clay unicorn
Questions they usually ask
Have an answer ready for each one before the first call.
- Are you a Canadian-rooted founder (born, raised, educated, or building in Canada at some point)?
- Do you plan to raise your next round from US VCs, and is the Silicon Valley network material to your plan?
- Where will the company be incorporated and where will the founders sit?
Follow-on
Maple VC keeps fund-size-appropriate reserves and prioritizes pro-rata in breakout companies, leveraging C100 and Inovia ties to bring US tier-1 leads into Series A and B. Founders should expect proactive introductions, not lead cheques on follow-ons.
