Their thesis, in full
Concrete Ventures is a Halifax-based pre-seed venture capital fund founded in 2019 by Patrick Hankinson (co-founder of Tether, founder of Compilr acquired by lynda.com and subsequently LinkedIn). The fund reached nearly $18M CAD with backing from the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation and other Atlantic LPs, against a target raised from $17M to $18.5M. It backed Atlantic Canada startups with $100K to $750K cheques, often leading or co-leading rounds, with 40 percent of the fund allotted to follow-on investments. Its 21 portfolio companies include Spellbook, Talkatoo, 3D BioFibR, Carbide, NovaResp and PayTic, with five acquisitions: TrojAI (A10 Networks), SalesRight (FastSpring), Proof (Daylight Automation), Bright Breaks (Wellable) and Terris. The fund states it is no longer making new investments and is focused on supporting its existing portfolio. Operator GP background brings real founder empathy at the earliest stage.
What they bring past the cheque
- No new investments, support focused on the existing portfolio
- Operator GP (co-founder of Tether, founder of Compilr acquired by lynda.com then LinkedIn)
- NBIF and Atlantic LP base
- Atlantic Canada pre-seed track record since 2019 with five acquisitions
- Halifax hub presence
Questions they usually ask
Have an answer ready for each one before the first call.
- Are you already a Concrete Ventures portfolio company, given the fund states it is no longer making new investments?
- If so, what support from a hands-on operator GP would move your next milestone?
- Which active Atlantic investors (Build Ventures, Invest Nova Scotia, NBIF) are you lining up for your next round?
Follow-on
Forty percent of the fund was allotted for follow-on investments, so remaining capacity goes to existing portfolio companies. Concrete is no longer making new investments, and its last sourced round was the June 2025 3D BioFibR financing alongside Build Ventures, Invest Nova Scotia and AoA Innovation Fund. Founders raising a new Atlantic pre-seed or Series A should approach those funds directly.
