Their thesis, in full
adMare BioInnovations is a national, largely federally and industry funded life sciences venture builder, institute, and investor, often described as Canada's life sciences company creation engine. Rather than writing cheques as a pure VC, it co-creates and scales biotech, therapeutics, and medical-device companies out of Canadian academic research, combining catalytic pre-seed and seed investment with hands-on commercial R&D, IP and business-development expertise, and over 200,000 sq ft of turnkey lab space in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto. Founders and scientists engage in three main ways: by partnering to translate promising academic discoveries into co-founded, investable companies; by accessing the adMare Academy and Executive Institute to build industry-ready talent and leadership; and by working with adMare to scale existing Canadian life sciences companies toward their next inflection point. The institute reinvests its commercial returns back into the Canadian ecosystem to sustain it long term. To date it has helped build 54 companies that have raised about 2.5 billion dollars in risk capital and reached a combined value of about 5.8 billion. It is a destination for scientists and entrepreneurs who need capital, deep drug-development expertise, infrastructure, and network in one place, not a passive financial backer.
What they bring past the cheque
- Company creation engine: co-founds and builds companies from academic research, not just funds them
- In-house drug-development capability: 100+ scientific and commercial experts plus 200,000+ sq ft of turnkey labs in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto
- National, pan-Canadian footprint (QC, BC, ON) backed by government and industry funding, with returns reinvested into the ecosystem
- Integrated talent engine: Executive Institute, ASCEND and BIS programs train industry-ready talent (Executive Institute alumni network spans nearly 150 leaders across 100+ organizations)
- Proven exit track record (Inversago to Novo Nordisk, Bellus to GSK)
Questions they usually ask
Have an answer ready for each one before the first call.
- What unmet medical need does your technology address, and how differentiated and defensible (IP) is it versus existing approaches?
- Is your discovery at a translatable pre-clinical stage where an adMare seed investment plus hands-on company building can reach a clear value inflection point that attracts private capital?
- Are you a Canadian-rooted academic team or emerging company open to co-creation (shared risk and reward, co-founding, shared infrastructure) rather than a simple financing?
Follow-on
adMare acts as a single-stop partner that contributes catalytic seed capital, professional R&D scientists, state-of-the-art infrastructure, IP and commercialization expertise, and a deep national and international partner network across every step from early drug development to commercialization. It works in a flexible shared risk and reward, co-founding model, embedding its experts alongside founders to generate data, IP, and a compelling business case that secures private-sector investors. For scientists and existing companies alike, the goal is to de-risk the science and reach the next value inflection point so that promising Canadian research becomes scalable, investable companies.
