Their thesis, in full
Espresso Capital provides venture debt to fast-growing technology and healthcare companies in the United States, Canada and the UK that deliver mission-critical core operations or other high-value solutions to their customers. The firm looks for at least $5M of revenue and deploys facilities of $5M to $25M+ (operating lines, term loans, unitranche and second lien, terms of up to five years, with a warrant-free option). Espresso is a non-dilutive alternative to traditional venture capital, ideal for extending runway, financing an acquisition or bridging to a round. Sponsor backing is common but not required: many borrowers have no equity sponsor. The platform suits disciplined founders focused on metrics and capital structure who want to optimize ownership without sacrificing control.
What they bring past the cheque

Questions they usually ask
Have an answer ready for each one before the first call.
- What is your gross retention and net revenue retention by cohort?
- How quickly can you reach EBITDA breakeven if you cut growth spend?
- Who is the equity sponsor and what is their reserve commitment?
Follow-on
Espresso structures facilities that let borrowers draw additional capital as the business scales, and it re-underwrites follow-on facilities for repeat borrowers to extend runway without dilution.
