Their thesis, in full
Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC) is a provincial government fund-of-funds, created by the Government of Alberta in 2008, that invests as a Limited Partner in venture capital funds; it does not invest directly in startups, so founders cannot pitch it for a cheque. Its mandate is to build a thriving venture capital industry in Alberta and to generate a return for Alberta taxpayers, and it does this by committing capital to VC funds that have (or agree to establish) a full-time senior presence in the province. As of December 2025 it had committed 434 million Canadian dollars across 41 funds spanning information technology, industrial and energy technology, and life sciences. Founders benefit indirectly: by raising from AEC-backed managers such as Yaletown, Mistral, Pender, Luge, Amplitude, McRock or Inovia, they reach funds that AEC has specifically required to invest in and be present in Alberta. In short, AEC is the layer behind your investors, the upstream LP that pulls active venture capital into the province so that local founders have more, and better-resourced, funds to raise from.
What they bring past the cheque
- Provincial government fund-of-funds: an institutional anchor LP, not a direct startup investor
- Forces capital into Alberta by requiring backed funds to have a full-time senior presence in the province
- 434M CAD committed across 41 VC funds (Dec 2025) spanning IT, industrial/energy tech and life sciences
- Has built and re-backed local Alberta managers (Accelerate Fund I-IV) and attracted national and North American funds to open Alberta offices
- Long-term mandate with the dual goal of ecosystem development and taxpayer ROI, reinvesting returns into the province
Questions they usually ask
Have an answer ready for each one before the first call.
- Does your fund have, or will it establish and maintain, a full-time senior investment professional and meaningful presence in Alberta for the life of the fund?
- How does your fund's sector and stage focus map to current Alberta technology deal flow, and what is your demonstrated track record and pipeline in the province?
- Does your fund meet AEC's structural criteria (VC limited partnership, minimum fund size around 50M or 20M for an Alberta micro-fund, at least two managing partners, standard market terms), and how will an AEC commitment anchor your broader LP base?
Follow-on
AEC supports the ecosystem upstream rather than backing companies directly: it selects and capitalizes VC funds, then requires those managers to commit a senior presence and active investment in Alberta, multiplying the capital available to local founders (it reports roughly 5 dollars of follow-on VC investment into Alberta tech for every 1 dollar it commits). Beyond capital, it convenes investors, entrepreneurs and experienced operators, runs the Start Alberta deal-flow platform and periodic Deal Flow Studies, and champions fund solutions that fill critical gaps. For founders, the practical path is to raise from AEC-backed managers; for fund managers, AEC acts as an anchor LP and door-opener into the Alberta market.
